Route 33 runs north along the San Joaquin River to Kern County, where it separates from Maricopa at the intersection of Interstate 5 and State Route 152. We continue westward, along Matilija Canyon and through the transversal chain to the top of the pine mountain.
In the 1970 "s, two major projects changed Avenal and the surrounding area: the construction of the California Aqueduct, which brought water to the west side, and the creation of Tulare Lake. Most of it is in Kings County, but it will soon be dry due to water diversion for agriculture and communities.
The area is currently being revitalized to attract more visitors and prepare for California's high-speed rail project.
